Standard form: f(x) = ax2 + bx + c

  • make a table and graph it
  • y-intercept is c
  • axis of symmetry with -b/2a
  • vertex from axis of symmetry with f(-b/2a)
  • a tells if opens up or down
  • small a means wide parabola, large a means narrow

Solving

  • solution = root = x-intercept = zero
  • read from table or graph
  • completing the square
  • quadratic formula
    • discriminant and number of solutions

Intercept form: f(x) = a(x - p)(x-q)

  • p and q are x-intercepts
  • factor standard form to get intercept form
  • FOIL intercept form to get standard form

Complex numbers

  • standard form
  • add, subtract, multiply, divide
  • simplify roots
  • powers of i

Vertex form: f(x) = a(x-h)2 + k

  • change standard form to vertex form
  • read vertex = (h, k) from vertex form
  • axis of symmetry

Quadratic inequalities

  • graph them
  • related equation
  • solve them
