Chocolate Coma Cookies

This is a simplified version of the recipe from "Tough Cookie" by Diane Mott Davidson.

Combine into one bowl:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Combine into a second bowl:

  • 1 cup dried tart cherries
  • 12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup slivered almonds

Beat until light and fluffy (about 4 minutes):

  • 1/2 lb butter

Add (in this order):

  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1.5 tsp vanilla extract
  • the first bowl of dry ingredients

Stir in (by hand or dough hook):

  • the second bowl of fruit and nuts

Using a 1 tablespoon scoop, place about a dozen cookies per baking sheet. I find that using baking parchment prevents scorching and sticking.

Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 14 minutes. Cool 2 minutes, then move to racks to cool completely. Makes 6 dozen cookies.
